Frequently asked questions

What is a PMHNP and how is it different from a psychiatrist?

A Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse with specialized training in psychiatric and mental health care. Like a psychiatrist, a board-certified PMHNP (PMHNP-BC) can evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medications. The primary difference is educational background — psychiatrists hold a medical degree (MD/DO) while PMHNPs hold a nursing degree (MSN/DNP). Latesia Miles, PMHNP-BC is board certified by the ANCC and fully licensed in Florida.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

Your initial evaluation is a comprehensive visit lasting 60–90 minutes. Latesia will review your psychiatric and medical history, current symptoms, medications, and personal goals. Together you’ll develop a treatment plan that may include medication management, therapy referrals, or lifestyle recommendations. Please bring your ID, insurance card, medication list, and any relevant prior records.

Is telehealth available and how does it work?

Yes. Secure, HIPAA-compliant video visits are available for patients located in Florida. After scheduling, you’ll receive instructions for our telehealth platform. You’ll need a device with a camera and microphone, and a private, quiet space. Telehealth may not be appropriate for all clinical situations — your provider will discuss whether it is suitable for your care needs.

What if I'm in a mental health crisis?

EscapeMind Psychiatry is not an emergency or crisis service. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988. The Crisis Text Line is also available — text HOME to 741741. If you are an established patient with an urgent non-emergency concern, please call our office during business hours.

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most major insurance plans. Because coverage varies by individual plan and policy, we strongly recommend calling your insurance company directly to verify your mental health and psychiatric benefits before your first appointment. You can also call our office at 954-901-0498 to help confirm participation. Self-pay options are also available.

Do you provide therapy or just medication?

EscapeMind Psychiatry is primarily medication-focused — Latesia provides psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis, and medication management. However, she uses an integrated care model and actively coordinates psychotherapy referrals to licensed therapists and community resources. Brief supportive counseling and psychoeducation are provided within medication visits as appropriate.

Do you treat adolescents? What age do you see?

Yes. EscapeMind Psychiatry serves patients ages 12 and older, through geriatric populations (65+). For adolescent patients (ages 12–17), parental or guardian consent is required. Latesia has extensive experience managing mood disorders, ADHD, anxiety, and behavioral concerns in younger populations. Please contact the office to discuss your adolescent’s specific needs.

How is my privacy and health information protected?

EscapeMind Psychiatry complies fully with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and all applicable Florida state privacy laws. Your protected health information (PHI) is never shared without your written consent, except as required or permitted by law (e.g., mandatory reporting, coordination of emergency care). Our telehealth platform is HIPAA-compliant and encrypted. A full Notice of Privacy Practices will be provided at your first visit.
